Michael Sanft, the Las Vegas defense attorney who represented Duane "Keefe D" Davis for free in the Tupac Shakur murder trial, has been found dead at his home in Las Vegas.

Sanft was a lead trial attorney at SOS Injury Lawyers, with more than 150 jury verdicts behind him. He took on Davis's defense pro bono and stood next to him through one of the most watched trials in hip hop history — the case that finally put a name in a courtroom for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, nearly 30 years later.

On August 31, 2026, a jury convicted Davis of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon enhancement. On October 13, 2026, he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

The fight was not over. On October 30, 2026, Sanft filed a notice of appeal, setting up the next round of the case. His death comes less than two weeks after that filing, and what happens next with Davis's legal team has not been announced. The appeal itself is filed and on the record — who carries it forward from here is now an open question.

What is not yet known: the cause of death. No cause has been released, and the matter is pending with the Clark County coroner's office. Reports on exactly when Sanft was found differ between outlets, so those details will be updated here as officials confirm them.
